Many patients pursue professional tooth whitening simply due to tooth discoloration caused by long-term enamel attrition and invisible enamel craze lines. However, from a professional dental perspective, severe enamel wear and generalized enamel cracks are absolute contraindications for bleaching treatment. Blind whitening in such conditions will inevitably damage tooth structure and pulp health.

Bleaching solution easily penetrates deeply into dentin, causing severe dentin hypersensitivity, persistent tingling pain, and in severe cases, irreversible pulpitis.

For teeth with enamel craze lines and microcracks, the risks are significantly higher. Bleaching oxidants infiltrate along microcracks toward the pulp cavity, irritating pulpal tissue and expanding existing micro-fractures. This accelerates enamel defect progression, increases the risk of tooth fracture, and shortens the long-term prognosis of natural teeth.

True dental aesthetics is not pursuing excessively bright white teeth. The ideal tooth state is natural, healthy, and lustrous. Slight warm yellow tone in natural teeth is a normal physiological feature. For worn and cracked teeth, clinical priority should be given to desensitization treatment, enamel remineralization, and minimally invasive restoration instead of blind whitening.

Abandoning the misconception of “whiter is better” and maintaining natural tooth health is the correct and long-term aesthetic principle in modern dentistry.
